For many years McAfee has been a dominant player in the enterprise software market with its E-Business Server product, and hats off to them for a long and successful run. There’s currently a major shift in the marketplace, though, with McAfee having stopped the sale of E-Business Server in January of 2013 and completely transitioned the product support to a third party in September of 2013.
Even though on its surface the McAfee announcement concerning the E-Business Server end-of-life (transition of service) is of interest primarily to the IT shops serving the kinds of Enterprise-level clients that might be running E-Business Server, it’s safe to say that the issue could potentially cause waves on a global scale. That potential exists precisely because of the kinds of businesses running the software. Large-scale organizations like banks, healthcare providers, insurers and government entities run E-Business Server — and billions of people around the world, in one form or another, have ties or otherwise conduct transactions with these kinds of organizations. And since E-Business Server is used for the encryption and decryption of user data, as well as authenticating and verifying that data, anyone that might have data stored by those companies is prone to exposure if the E-Business end-of-life (transition of service) issue isn’t properly addressed.
The potential impacts on Enterprise businesses and the people on whom they maintain data, then, are huge. That’s why McAfee announced the end-of-life (transition of service) more than a year and half ahead of time — so customers could not only be educated about the issue, but also have time to switch to a new solution which is owned and fully supported by one company.
Here at ASPG we’re happy that we have had — and will continue to have — a role to play in both educating organizations as well as providing them with an alternative to E-Business Server that they can switch to swiftly and easily. Because after all, we’ve been helping the Enterprise with encryption and decryption software for more than 25 years — and we’re not going to stop now.
