Naples, FL – October 2016
Advanced Software Products Group, Inc. (ASPG) has released MegaCryption version 6.4.2 for z/OS. MegaCryption is the prevailing enterprise cryptography software suite for applications, data sets, and databases on z/OS, UNIX, LINUX, and Windows. The new MegaCryption v6.4.2 for z/OS mainframes features updates for encryption, compression, data formatting, cross-platform interoperation, and SMF recording. Improvements in MegaCryption’s ISPF application, along with redesigned documentation, enable large and small enterprises to realize faster deployment of strong cryptography.
As a file-level cryptography solution, MegaCryption secures entire files, or specific fields within files, complementing transmission-level cryptography with z/OS, ICSF, OpenPGP, and OpenSSL standards. With the release of v6.4.2, MegaCryption broadens its array of cryptography tools by introducing a COBOL source code parser/analyzer. This feature, MGCPREP, assists with converting existing COBOL programs into cryptography-enabled COBOL applications. Additionally, MegaCryption v6.4.2 includes a new programming service to implement Format Preserving Encryption (FPE). FPE preserves the datatype, data presentation format, and length of enciphered data, assuring ciphertext compatibility in format-dependent applications or databases.
With the goal of simplifying cross-platform interoperation, MegaCryption’s updated MGCAR2B utility for base-64 to binary conversion has been updated to ignore bad data appended to armored records, enhancing toleration of common file conversion problems.
Another new feature in MegaCryption v6.4.2 is the COMPRESS=ZEDC data compression option. IBM’s zEnterprise Data Compression adapters (zEDC) offload the work of compression and decompression to the zEDC specialty compression service when hardware, firmware, and software requirements have been met. MegaCryption supports multiple compression formats on z/OS including hardware compression, Zip, Unzip, Gzip, and ZIP64 formats. Additionally, MegaCryption users can now search for data sets to be zipped using a data set search feature and save z/OS data set allocation attributes. Complementing these enhancements is a new unzip utility, MGCUNZIP, adding dynamic restore of data sets during unzip processing by reading eligible z/OS data set allocation attributes from an input zip archive. MegaCryption’s ISPF application, MGCFMAIN, has also been updated to support the new features of MGCCZIP and MGCUNZIP.
Other enhancements in MegaCryption v6.4.2 include SMF recording and the redesign of the MegaCryption User Guide. The new SMF record layout supports more batch utilities and includes the date, time, userid, and other cryptography parameters to enable accounting for MegaCryption operations on your system. The MegaCryption User Guide now includes details on the supported cryptography and key management systems along with guidance on the planning and implementation of MegaCryption. With updated use-cases, a technology reference, and diagnostic documentation, the new user guide offers an accessible and detailed guide for experienced and novice cryptographers alike.
Along with MegaCryption for z/OS, ASPG offers MegaCryption-PC and MegaCryption-IX, popular encryption tools for file cryptography on Windows, UNIX, and LINUX computers. MegaCryption-PC and MegaCryption-IX support OpenPGP and OpenSSL cryptography standards.
