In the high-stakes world of protecting data stored in IBM’s DB2 databases, any gains in efficiency and security are good things – and the latest release by Advanced Software Products Group (ASPG) of their Megacryption DB software brings just such gains to systems and database administrators around the world.
An incredible amount of sensitive information is stored in databases around the globe—identities, financial records, trade secrets, authentication credentials, credit card and bank account numbers, and much more. It’s literally billions – and perhaps even trillions — of dollars’ worth of valuable data. Having that data compromised is highly damaging to both companies and the individuals; in the best case it’s a PR mess for a company, and in the worst cases data compromise can cripple companies, ruin careers, and wipe out the personal finances of those impacted. Properly encrypting data can prevent such compromise, but encrypting and decrypting data can be so inefficient for databases and applications that some administrators choose to roll the dice and not encrypt at all.
The latest release of MegaCryption DB helps to remove much of that inefficiency by allowing administrators the choice of encrypting either entire tables or just selected fields. Since encrypting and decrypting data are processes that add time to any insertion or retrieval of data from a database, choosing to encrypt only sensitive fields can exponentially improve the performance of the kinds of very large systems that tend to be backed by the DB2 database. Further, the Megacryption DB software allows administrators to choose from multiple encryption standards such as AES, CAST-5, DES, Triple DES, and Blowfish – exponentially increasing security as well as efficiency.
“We work with system and database administrators all around the world,” said ASPG President Cathryn Thompson. “Security and efficiency are primary concerns of theirs on a daily basis. And with this release of Megacryption DB, we’re helping them in both those areas.”
